How to Prepare for Your Family Photoshoot in Birmingham

Planning a family photoshoot in Birmingham can feel a little overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! With a bit of preparation, your shoot can be relaxed, fun, and full of natural moments that you’ll treasure forever. Here’s my guide to getting ready for your family session, whether we’re wandering around a park or capturing memories in your home or garden.

Comfort is Key

The most important thing you can bring to your family photoshoot in Birmingham is comfort. If you’re comfortable, your photos will feel natural and relaxed. High heels aren’t usually the best choice, especially if we’re exploring a park or chasing after little ones. Opt for footwear you can move around in, and clothes you feel good wearing. Feeling comfortable makes it easier to enjoy the session and makes the photos look amazing.

Coordinating Outfits

I recommend thinking about how everyone’s outfits work together. You don’t need to match perfectly but try to avoid clashing colours or busy patterns. Big slogans or logos can be distracting in photos, so it’s usually best to keep clothing simple. A few coordinating tones or a subtle theme can tie the family look together without feeling forced. Considering the season and prominent colours in the park can work as well.

Less is More

Try not to bring lots of bags, coats, or extras you don’t need. We usually go for a wander during the shoot, and carrying lots of items can slow down the flow. If it’s cold, a coat or scarf is fine, but keeping things minimal will help the session feel natural and allow the focus to stay on your family so you don’t have to keep finding somewhere to put spare items and have to carry them round with you.

Plan for the Kids

If you have little ones, think about what helps them feel happy and comfortable. Sometimes a favourite toy or snack can help them relax, (if you don’t mind crumbs round their mouth!) but avoid too many props that might distract from the natural moments. The easier it is for them to move and explore, the more genuine smiles and interactions we’ll capture.
