Preparing for Your Newborn Photoshoot at Home

Those first few weeks with your newborn pass in a blur of feeds, cuddles and very little sleep. If you’re wondering about preparing for a newborn photoshoot at home, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know before your session. From what to wear and how to prepare your home to including siblings, pets and special keepsakes, I’ll help you feel relaxed and ready for a stress free newborn photoshoot.

I love photographing families during those precious early weeks.

I’m based in Birmingham and photograph newborn sessions across Birmingham, the West Midlands and Worcestershire. My lifestyle newborn shoots take place in the comfort of your own home because I know how difficult it can be to pack up everything you need and venture out with a brand new baby.

My aim is to create relaxed, natural photographs that capture your family just as you are. No awkward posing, no pressure and no expectations of perfection. Just genuine moments and beautiful memories of this special chapter in your lives.

Most of my newborn sessions generally take place within the first few weeks after birth when babies are still wonderfully tiny but there’s no strict deadline. Every baby is different and beautiful photographs can be created whether your little one is days or weeks old.

There’s No Rush

One thing I always tell parents is not to worry about whether their baby will cooperate.

My newborn sessions last for up to three hours, giving us plenty of time for everything your little one needs.

If your baby needs feeding, changing, cuddling or settling that’s absolutely fine. We simply work around them and go at their pace. You will be holding them in a lot of photos and that’s where they’re normally in their happy place.

There is no rush and no pressure to keep moving. The session is designed to be relaxed and enjoyable for everyone involved. Some of the loveliest photographs are often captured during those quiet moments in between.

The most important thing is that your baby is comfortable and happy.

Preparing for a Newborn Photoshoot at Home: What Should You Have Ready?

There’s very little preparation needed for an at-home newborn session.

A few things that can be helpful include:

  • A couple of outfit options for your baby
  • Favourite blankets
  • Special toys or keepsakes
  • Anything meaningful that you’d like included in the photographs

There’s no need to buy anything specifically for the shoot. I always encourage families to choose outfits and items that feel personal to them.

Your favourite sleepsuit often means far more than a carefully curated outfit bought just for photographs.

What Should Parents Wear for a Newborn Photoshoot at Home?

A question I get asked a lot is what parents should wear for a newborn photoshoot.

The simple answer is: wear something that feels comfortable and feels like you.

There’s no need to buy a new outfit specifically for the session. Choose clothes that suit your style and that you’ll feel relaxed wearing for a few hours at home.

I would generally avoid large logos, slogans or very busy patterns as they can draw attention away from the main focus of the photographs… your beautiful new baby. Other than that, there’s plenty of flexibility.

If possible, it’s worth making sure family members’ outfits don’t clash too much but there’s no need for everyone to match exactly. The aim is for the photographs to feel natural and authentic, not overly coordinated.

And if you’re feeling self conscious please try not to worry. Almost every new parent tells me they feel tired, emotional or not quite themselves yet. That’s completely understandable.

As a parent myself, I know how vulnerable it can feel to step in front of the camera during those early weeks. I’ll guide you into flattering positions, use the best light available and photograph you from angles that help you feel comfortable and confident.

Most importantly, the focus of the session is your connection with your baby. The love, cuddles and tiny moments you share together are what make these photographs so special.

Can Siblings Be Included in the Photoshoot?

Absolutely!

Newborn photography doesn’t just have to be about your new baby, it’s about capturing your growing family and the relationships that are already forming.

Older brothers and sisters are very welcome to be part of the session. Whether they’re excited to show off their new sibling, keen to give them a cuddle or would rather spend most of the session playing we’ll work around their personality and comfort level.

Like the rest of the shoot, sibling photographs are relaxed and natural. There’s no expectation for children to sit still for long periods or smile on command. Some of the most meaningful images come from genuine interactions, whether that’s a cuddle on the sofa, a kiss on the forehead or simply sitting together and getting to know each other.

The length of the session also helps. With up to three hours available, there’s plenty of time for siblings to settle in, have a break if they need one and join in when they’re ready.

These early days are a huge adjustment for the whole family and including siblings helps tell the complete story of this exciting new chapter in your lives.

Which Rooms Will We Use?

I use natural light wherever possible, so we’ll make use of whichever rooms have the best light on the day.

Popular locations include:

The Nursery

If the nursery is ready, it’s lovely to include a few photographs there. You’ve spent months preparing the room and it’s a wonderful part of your family’s story.

your Bedroom

Bedrooms often create cosy, intimate photographs filled with cuddles and connection.

The Living Room

Living rooms are perfect for relaxed family photographs and everyday moments together.

The Garden

If the weather is nice and you’d like to step outside for a few photographs, we can use the garden too.

Ultimately, I’ll photograph wherever you feel comfortable. Every home is different and I’ll work with whatever spaces feel right for your family.

Preparing Your Home for a Newborn Photoshoot: Does My House Need To Be Spotless?

Absolutely not.

Honestly, I know that’s almost impossible with a newborn.

Please don’t spend days worrying about cleaning your entire house before I arrive.

All we really need are one or two tidy areas where we’ll be taking photographs. That might be a made bed, a tidy corner of the living room or the nursery.

The focus of the photographs will always be your family and your baby, not whether you’ve managed to put the washing away.
